Hotel Pet Policy Details

Pet Fees

Varies by brand & property. Choice Hotels’ pet fees range roughly $10 up to $75 per night, per pet . Many of the mid-range brands (Comfort, Quality) tend to charge around $20–$30 per night per pet as a typical fee. Some economy brands in the Choice family charge lower (e.g. $10–$15), while upscale Ascend Collection hotels might charge higher or per stay fees. A few hotels set a maximum per-stay fee (for example, capped at $150 per stay). Refundable deposits: Some Choice hotels may require a refundable pet deposit or cleaning fee at check-in, but this is not universal – it depends on the property.

Weight Limits

Weight limits vary; there is no single standard. Often around 50 lbs per pet is a common limit at pet-friendly Comfort/Quality Inns. Some Choice hotels allow larger dogs (up to 75–80 lbs), whereas others may have lower limits (20–30 lbs at certain motels). Because of this variation, Choice advises that guests confirm weight limits with the specific hotel.

Breed Restrictions

Breed restrictions at some properties. While Choice Hotels doesn’t have a chain-wide banned-breed list, certain brands or hotels do state breed restrictions (for example, some Sleep Inn or Rodeway Inn locations explicitly prohibit specific breeds) . Always check with the hotel if you have a breed sometimes perceived as aggressive. Many Choice hotels simply require that pets be non-aggressive and well-behaved, without naming breeds.

Max Pets per Room

Typically 2 pets per room. The general guideline at Choice’s pet-friendly hotels is a maximum of two pets in one room . (A few hotels may only allow one, or occasionally permit 3 small pets, but 2 is the norm.)

Types of Pets Permitted

Dogs are the most commonly allowed pets at Choice hotels. Cats are permitted at some properties, but others are “dogs only” – it varies (often left to the hotel owner’s discretion). Choice’s official materials often refer to “two dogs per room” , implying dogs are standard; if you plan to bring a cat or other pet, you should inquire with the hotel directly. Other domestic pets (birds, etc.) might be accepted on a case-by-case basis at some locations, but there is no guarantee.

Required Documentation

Apart from signing a pet waiver, Choice hotels generally do not require documentation. No standard proof-of-vaccination is demanded at check-in, but some hotels might ask for a contact number and confirmation that your pet’s shots are current. If traveling internationally (e.g., to Europe), ensure you have vaccination records as local regulations may require them, though the hotel itself might not check.

Pet Friendly Amenities

Amenities: Pet amenities at Choice brand hotels tend to be minimal. Expect basics like possible pet relief areas (grassy spots) and waste bag dispensers at many locations. It’s less common to find extras like pet beds or treats, though a friendly front desk might offer a treat. Higher-end Ascend Collection or Cambria hotels may provide a bowl or treat bag, but it’s not standardized. In general, Choice hotels focus on being budget-friendly, so pet travelers should plan to bring any special items they need (bed, bowls, etc.) for their pet.

Other Restrictions

Restrictions: Almost universally, Choice pet-friendly hotels will require pets to be leashed or crated in public areas, and they are not allowed in dining/breakfast areas or pools. Many Choice properties do not allow pets to be left alone in the room (especially not uncrated). Some hotels explicitly say pets are not allowed on beds or furniture . You’ll be expected to prevent noise disturbances (so your pet doesn’t disrupt other guests). Always inform housekeeping if you have a pet and coordinate room cleaning for when you are present or the pet is crated/removed.

Additional Notes

Notes: Choice Hotels includes multiple brands, and over 3,500 of their hotels are pet-friendly , but policies are set locally. For example, most Comfort Inn/Suites and Quality Inn locations allow pets, whereas some higher-end brands like Cambria or Ascend may have fewer pet-friendly properties. Because of the variation, it’s important to call ahead to the specific hotel to confirm their pet policy (fees, weight limits, etc.) before booking. Service animals are allowed at all Choice hotels without any fee or restrictions. Choice’s website allows filtering for pet-friendly hotels to make it easier to find accommodating properties.
